We have an old Zanussi washing machine that stillw washes fine but occasionally leaves black marks on clothes. This doesn't happen all the time. The filter is regularly cleaned and the black marks appear to come through the holes in the drum as an imprint can often been seen. Can anyone advise where this black dirt arises from and how I might deal with it without having an expensive call out? Thanks everyone ,,,,,,

Come on men. Even if you call someone to repair your zanussi, the cost it was gross. And keep in mind cause shortly maybe fail again. In the market there are plenty of brand and unbrand washer machines. Take one and live with that many happy years.

It sounds to me that the washer could do with washing. Sounds daft, doesn't it?. Go to any hardware store or supermarket or Wilkinson's and buy Washing Soda. It is about 55p for a good sized bag. Tip half into machine and set on hottest wash. Don't put any clothes in the wash, just this. When it has finished, do it again with half a pint of white vinegar. Together these two items will have cleaned any old residue of soap from the machine, and the vinegar will clean the scale of the heating element, therefore saving you money. The washing soda will have cleaned the drain as well. If rubber marks persist and you can't afford to replace machine just yet, put clothes in old pillowcases and then wash.

Theres some stuff you can get to clean all the scale and stuff out your machine; its not Calgon its acid based. Some supermarkets stock it, try that. Although it sounds like an oil seals gone.
There used to be a series of books you could get from the library that explains how to mend your telly, washing machine and so on; see if you can get one for your machine. If you can do basic DIY you can fix it.

if its really old the black marks will prob be from the drum seals... its time to get a new one as it sounds like the rubber seals are breaking down.. hence the black marks the hotter the was the worse it will get

stick some white shirts and other cotton type whites
and do a boil wash with bleach.
this was a tip i picked up a few years ago. it cleans out the drum and surrounds quite nicely. long as u don't go too mad with the bleach, u don't want to damage the seal!
good luck.

i don't think it's dirt, if it is black or really dark it is probably a rubber seal in your wash that is getting slowly dissolved over time and coming in contact with your clothes. check the seals that might be your problem
