I have had great results using the muriatic acid from the hardware store on a really stubborn drain problem, but you must be careful with it. Read the instructions. Over many years, I've wasted hundreds of dollars on Liquid Plummer and Drano. They are worthless. For a simple drain cleaner when a drain is only slightly sluggish, try pouring a cup of regular liquid bleach down the drain and leave it alone for a half hour. Then, rinse it down with really hot water. A former plumber friend put me on to this one and it works.

And after you get it unclogged, start a monthly ritual of baking soda and vinegar to keep them clear and fresh. Put about 1/4 cup baking soda in drain followed by 1/4 cup vinegar and quickly put a rag over the drain so the force of the foaming goes down the drain and not into the sink. It works great. We have plastic plumbing and our own septic system and have never had a problem.

None of the above, you will just be throwing your money away and further damaging your drainage system by dumping highly corrosive chemicals on your pipes.
If you have cast iron pipes, which would be very old by now, since ABS (plastic) is commonly used nowadays it will eat thru the metal walls. And if you have ABS pipe its just as bad on the glue that hold your fittings together.
Nothing better than snaking your drain
