I am 21, living in Exeter (Devon), having been born in rural Dorset. Safe to say that, like many others, I am deeply upset by the way the UK is sliding- despite my young age I feel I am able to make such observations as they are bolstered by the views of the older generations!

I have noticed that a good chunk of the general popluation (myself included) have an inherent apathy when it comes to politics and voting, except when it comes to moaning about whoever is in charge at the time. I think this apathy is to blame for many of our troubles as a nation and a sense of national pride should be re-installed to cure it; we need to see the rebirth of British industry (and re-nationalisation) and the traditional education system reinstored. We have become soft and this needs to change, but there is no catalyst in place for this with our current politcal system.

Do you think we'd accept a modern, peace-time Winston Churchill (who, of course, came to power legitimately) to do this?

I think the essence of what I'm trying to get at is that politics hasn't really solved anything (in my limited understanding), and that beaurocracy gets in the way of our progress.

Re-install national pride (without overly nationalistic, fascist overtones!), and in some ways take a step back fifty years in order to get us back on track.

Does anyone agree? Thanks!

They will accept one when I get into power. Oh yes.

On a serious note, technically blaire and thatcher were not dictators. That's why they both got told where to go and what to swivel on.

Generally we don't care as long as they're doing a good job, but I think the british people as a whole wouldn't stand for anyone who messed up. Monarchs loose their heads. That kinda thing. Dictoatorship would be... unwise.

As a nation, we like to moan about how things should be better but we're too lazy to do anything about it. The real work of Politics isn't sexy & we always love to knock politicians...but if it wasn't for the serious, duty-minded politicians who work hard on commitees we never hear about or care about, then what would get done ? Yes, some MPs etc are full of sh*t but what about those faceless ones putting in the hours of work because they believe in something ?

It will take more than a benign dictator to shake us out of our apathy, I'm afraid.

Oh..and nationalistaion of industry is a horrible idea. If the fat cats have too much power they exploit the working people, but if the workers get too much power (as in nationalised industries like British Leyland in the 70s) then productivity & innovation dies.

You could say that the British people already have, although I don't see much benevolence in Tony Blair and his henchmen. I think that, in difficult times many people yearn for strong leadership and action to resolve the problems they face. Despite the current villification of Margaret Thatcher, she sorted out the appalling mess of the late Seventies and won 3 elections because of it.

Too many people seem to think that politics is boring. So it can be but if you show no nterest how are you qualified to vote? The apathy that now exists is partly the reason why we are rapidly losing the right to freedom of speech and democracy in general. They say you get the Government you deserve...As for benevolent despotism, I don't believe that such a thing can exist, or not for long. Absolute power corrupts etc.

The other mans grass is always greener, we've had dictators, they were called kings. you don't know what a ruler will be like until you get them. Be careful what you wish for.

I think a modern, peace-time Winston Churchill will be good. However, he needs to be found.

Only if they were very photogenic... maybe if they were a famous actor.

Yes; I think the people of Britain are that shallow!
