Hi John!
I'm a general contractor, and lived on my property with a large well tank for 20 years. Without knowing your total capacity and flow, no "right" amount, but an easy guide is to add enough so that when the water reaches you faucets the smell is easily detectable, then leave the system closed for at least an hour, then flush using the faucet farthest from the well first. The chlorine will wash out fast, and isn't harmful to you in the amounts left after flushing. 50 to 100 parts per million will get rid of most worries, but it's inexpensive and fast, so don't worry about maybe using too much!

Pour a half gallon of bleach (unscented) for a 4" dia. well that is 100 ' deep (3/4 gallon for 150' deep, etc.). Run water through all faucets and hose bibs until you smell chlorine. Let the system sit overnight and then flush all faucets and hose bibs.
