A few things really, some mentioned already (like the bridge). It also hosts a famous arts/theatre festival - Festival d'Avignon - every year (http://www.festival-avignon.com/index.php?lg=en&r=1).
It's also famous for the Palais des Papes, a medieval Gothic building, which was used as a residence for the Popes in the 1300s (from 1309 to 1377 when the seat of the Papcy was moved from Rome to Avignon - another claim to fame in itself).
