I sprained my finger yesterday by hitting it off a desk by accident, and my finger went back. So i left school, went to the walk-in and the doctor examined my finger and said that it was just a sprain because I was moving it too well for it to be anything too serious. He didn't send me for x-rays because he said I didn't need one at all. Anyways, he suggested a splint, so he gave me one, as well as to apply ice on it, and to flex it a bit but not too roughly. I've been doing all that, but I noticed that the purple spot on my finger widened a bit [ my finger was normal in color, except for the purple spot by my knuckle ]. It just looks like a bruise. My mum said it was normal because it was healing. Today, I looked again and the purple spot got lighter. So I'm not really sure.

Should I be concerned?

If it is not swelling, you can move it, and the bruise is decreasing after a day, I would not worry. Ice is useful to decrease swelling for the first day or two; warm soaks or compresses after that helps healing by increasing the blood flow to the injured area and helps the pain resolve. If things should look to be getting worse and not better, consult your physician again.

You are probably fine, the Doctor apparently took an X ray of the finger and eliminated any break in the bone. Such an impact probably would cause a bruise as you mention. I would apply ice as warranted to reduce swelling and pain coupled with motrin, aspirin, or naproxin sodium for swelling. Use the finger as much as you can tolerate and your healing should progress normally.
If after 6 weeks or so the pain is still abnormal, then revisit your physician.

I'm a nurse. The doctor should have ordered an x-ray to be sure. The purple color I think is due to the injury. It's so hard to detect what's going on without seeing it for myself. I would get another opinion and ask for an x-ray. This is your finger and it could be more than just a sprain.

No, it really is nothing. I've had many sprains and broken fingers and usually just strap them together. The bruise is normal. people sprain their fingers all the time, which is why x-rays aren't used. It's a common occurrence, so stop worrying

what the well being care provider will do is this... he gets a sprint white roll of tape, and tape your swollen pinky finger to the finger beside it to grant it greater help. by taping it, you will nonetheless have some flexibility interior the finger, plus that's going to be stabilized. you could bypass to the drug keep and get a white roll of tape, or you ought to purchase a finger splint, however the splints are rather a friggin nuisance...you have plenty greater advantageous use of your hand with the tape. Oh yeah, you will additionally prefer to place some ICE, not warmth to decrease the swelling.

Probably not, as the bruise got lighter. I broke my toe and it got really bruised. I didn't go to the doctor and it healed and got crooked.
