If it must be one or the other, then "females" came first, but not females in the traditional sense. The most primitive form of reproduction involving two organisms occurs when one bacteria donates genetic material to another bacteria (a process called recombination, specifically conjugation). While the original [female] bacteria could have successfully reproduced asexually and therefore came first, through contributions from the other [male] bacteria, it can produce a unique, offspring with genetic material from both "parents". Of course, the original bacteria itself is changed in the process as well.

I'd say female came first, producing self fertile gametes which would grow into an exact copy of the parent. Over time evolution would have formed separate male and female sex organs which are dependant upon each other to produce offspring. Originally these would have both been on the same individual as in many plants and some invertibrates, but further evolution allowed the specialisation of individuals to have either male or female genitals. This is when "male" would have been formed, some million years after the "female".

We are clearly told, Biblically, that the male came first; then God said 'It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make an helpmeet for him."
So, He created Eve, and "blessed them" [meaning, as part of that blessing, He sealed them to be together - "married", as we call it today].
He made the better things later, rather than earlier - thus Eve, being the last, was actually First in His sight, and was His crowning and most beautiful creation.
My Book, "TWO BIRDS ... ONE STONE!!", by Denis Towers, out very soon through amazon.com actually scientifically proves the story of Creation, and especially, the Adam and Eve 'story'.

along the lines of the chicken and the egg --- the egg had to arrive first in order for the chicken to be born --- and so therefore women obviously came before men .

i think both came together. because if any one of them had come first, it would not have been possible for the other to come. reproduction would only have been possible with both of them present.
