I am a 7 yr operation iraqi freedom veteran w/ the gi bill. My grades in h.s. were very low, I had a 2.5 gpa. What are my chances of getting into a decent university with these grades?

Define 'decent'. My grades in High school weren't great (they were around yours), but I got into a university. Of course I graduated with a BS in Psych and never did anything with it. If you want to get real money after graduation, go to a trade school. At least they TEACH you how to do stuff there, unlike most university programs. My SAT's weren't the best either. If you really want to go to college, get your transcript looking better by going to a community college for 2 years, then transfer. Just make sure to get a transfer guide for colleges you want to apply to so you don't waste credits on stuff that may not transfer.

First, apply to the colleges you want and see what happens. You will never really know unless you try. Some colleges just might accept your 2.5 because they know you took time off to serve your country and have matured by having been in the military.

One person said GMAT test. That is the Graduate Management Admission Test and is used to get into graduate school, not required for an undergraduate degree. The test you will be looking at is either the SAT ( Standardized Test for College) or ACT (Assessment college Test). There are study guide books to help you pass that test. Getting a good score on whichever test the college requires will really help to get you in.

I will also suggest that if you don't get in, do what I did. My high school grades were nothing short of dismal. I squeaked through and a semester at a community college proved I was not college material.

After some years had passed, I wanted a college degree. I first went to a community college for one semester, as they accept just about anyone. I got a 3.8 gpa for the semester. Having a bit of space between the time I blew it to when I went back really helped.

With such a good average, I was able to easily get in a decent University. They said I proved to them I could do well. Now I have both a bachelors and masters degree. To get a masters, I had to maintain a 3.0 gpa all the way through.

At the community college I worked on the core courses the university required and they just transfered right over to the university, making it a lot easier for me.

Good luck

Military service goes a long way with universities and the job market in general, especially having served a tour like you have. Apply to any one you want and I bet you will get a postive result on more than half.
