You need to do regular housekeeping on your pc to keep it running sweet.
First, uninstall any software you installed but don't use.
Then delete any old files you no longer need, back up any old ones to cd or an external hard drive.
Next run Ccleaner, use the Issues tool and the Cleaner.
Then run Spybot Search and Destroy; the safe download site is below. Be careful not to get a fake program. Remove any spyware it finds.
Then run an anti virus.
Use Winpatrol to stop all your programs loading on startup, it just slows up your pc. Leave your anti virus and anti spyware. All your other programs will be available from the start menu.
Delete any desktop shortcuts and get into the habit of loadind programs from the start menu, it uses less memory.
Finally defragment the hard drive from Start - accessories - system tools - disc defragmenter.
And upgrade to a gig of RAM if you can afford it.

In future run Ad-Aware SE Personal and Ccleaner every day, and Spybot S&D and your anti virus every week.

You need to install one firewall.
The Windows firewall doesn't stop malware on your pc from dialling out.
http://www.zonelabs.com Zone Alarm firewall OR
http://www.comodogroup.com/ - Comodo firewall.

You need to install one anti virus;
http://free.grisoft.com/freeweb.php/doc/2/ -AVG anti virus or
http://www.avast.com - Avast Antivirus

You need all three anti spyware programs;
http://www.ewido.net - AVG(Ewido) anti trojan.
http://www.lavasoft.com - Ad-Aware SE Personal anti adware
http://www.safer-networking.org - Spybot Search and Destroy anti spyware. Use the Teatimer settings to protect Internet Explorer, and the Immuniser to stop malware getting on your pc.
Also use Microsoft Defender and their online scans.

And these are useful utilities;
http://www.mozilla.com/ - Firefox web browser.
http://www.ccleaner.com Cr*pcleaner Registry cleaner and privacy tool
Winpatrol is a handy utility that manages cookies on your pc and stops unwanted changes to your startup folder.

Spywareblaster works with Internet Explorer and Firefox. It won't uninstall spyware that is already on your pc, but it will prevent hijacks and other malicious changes to your browser.

http://spywarewarrior.com/rogue_anti-spyware.htm - The Spyware Warrior site identifies fake anti spyware programs.

Remember to update and run all of you anti malware programs at least once a week.

Try doing this, it will disable things that you do not need upon startup:

Start --> Run --> type in msconfig --> go to the Startup tab

disable the programs you do not think you need to run upon startup. I disable all of mine except for my virus scan, anything else I can start manually when I need it.

If it is still slow, consider scanning your computer for viruses and/or spy/ad ware. If you have a good anti virus program it will protect against this type of thing.

Also, your computer may be slow because of your hardware. If it is an older computer, think about an upgrade. There are many things that may be outdated and need upgrading. Sometimes putting in another chip of RAM works. Sometimes you might want to think of a newer processor. It all depends. If you dont know much about computer upgrading either take it somewhere or buy a new computer.

Dude, your problem--simply put--is that you have a host of programs that you've downloaded on your machine that have logged themselves on to your startup menu without your specific okay for them to do that !! And a majority of these programs do not NEED to be cranked up at system start---there are very few programs that you truly need at that time--these others are just simply hogs for upfront attention--- and the system tray---and the quick launch bar !!!
Get yourself a super good ---and free---startup manager and put it to work---- My suggestion here would be the one that I have been using for some time----It is called The Startup Optimizer--- and can be found at http://www.download.com/
It is a very solid program that gives you the option to allow or disallow anything that is logged on to your start menu and it gives you a rundown on exactly which ones of these are absolutely esential and the ones that aren't !!

Another thing here---alot of the "slow" in your system is a strong sign that you are running short on RAM---you have two options here --- you can go in search of a program called Free Ram XP Pro----a free download at the web address stated earlier----when you run this dude---it will free up RAM on your system and make things MUCH smoother for you-----OR you can go an purchase more RAM (memory) at the computer store ---I would suggest at least 1 G for any system today----this will probably run somewhere in the neighborhood of approximately $ 150 U S D

Hopefully something in all this is going to put you into the mix and get you speeding down the web highway !! Good luck !!

Some reasons are -
1.Too many programs running in your system.Try using the ADD or REMOVE program to delete those unwanted programs
2.Your computer may be suffering from virus.Run Anti-virus to check the status.
3.It might be hardware problem e.g power supply unit,processor,RAM,e.t.c.

I'd run adware and spyware scans,
alternatively, if you go to start, run and type in msconfig, and then select startup you can select which programs are executed at startup, this will help your pc boot up faster.
For ad and spyware programs, I use these 2, they're free and work well.

Please have the patience to read ALL of these:

1.Download CCleaner from http://www.ccleaner.com/ and run it once daily before shutting down your computer. It removes all the trash files that are created while surfing through the net. Use its Issues section once every 2 weeks to delete all the unused registry keys. If you have a lot of Auto Start entries, then you can remove them from its Tools > Startup. But keep the important ones like firewall and the real-time protection shields of your anti-virus and anti-spyware.

2.Keep a decent anti-virus, a strong firewall and at least two anti-spywares in your computer. Always keep the real time protection shield (or resident shield) of the anti-virus and one of the anti-spyware active. Update them and scan your computer once every week with both the anti-spyware and once every 2 weeks with anti-virus. I have given the links to some free and good anti-virus, anti-spyware and firewall; get them all:
AVG: http://free.grisoft.com/doc/5390/lng/us/tpl/v5#avg-anti-virus-free
AdAware SE: http://www.download.com/ad-aware-se-pers...
SpyBot Search and Destroy: http://fileforum.betanews.com/detail/spy...
Comodo Personal Firewall: http://www.personalfirewall.comodo.com/
Never keep two anti-virus or firewall on a single system. If you are already using a good anti-virus or firewall, then you need not download the corresponding one. You can, however, use as many anti-spywares as you want.

3.Keep a virtual memory booster as an auto-start entry. It frees the clogged RAM. I use RAM Booster, which is very effective. Here is the link to download it:
http://www.download.com/rambooster/3000-...
After downloading it, follow the steps:
*. Click on Edit>Options and tick the follow options:
(a) Set auto optimisation on
(b) Show CPU usage
(c) Start minimised
(d) Launch automatically at start up
Also, increase the auto optimisation level and 'Mb of RAM to free at auto level' as per your requirement.

4.Keep at least 35% of your C: free. Transfer all the music, image and video files to other drives.

5.Defragment your hard drives (especially C:) once every month. To defrag, go to Start>All Programs>Accessories>System Tools>Defragment. It takes a lot of time (50 minutes or over) so don’t become impatient. It’s for your computer’s good.

6.Get the free Google Web Accelerator to boost up your Internet speed.
http://webaccelerator.google.com/

7.Keep your Recycle Bin empty.

8.Use minimum possible shortcut icons on your desktop.

9.If you have genuine Windows, keep it updated every month.

10.Trim down the number of games if you have way too many.

11.You will hate this suggestion, but believe me; blank wallpaper helps a faster startup.

If nothing works, you should reformat your computer. You may also upgrade your RAM, preferably 512 MB or higher, if you are willing to spend a few bucks.

hit delete-alt-ctrl then click processes, you shouldn,t have more than 32 processes running, if you have more you need to use spy/adware removal software and shut down unneeded auto start programs( those little icons by your time display, lower right corner)
