the street was deserted. a middle-aged man was walking all alone absorbed in his thoughts. "sir, sir, give a penny to the blind man, sir!" asked a beggar. the person was disturbed from his thoughts. "i'm a blind man, sir. please give me something!" the man brought out his purse and began searching for a coin. there it was - a ten-paise coin. he dropped the coin into the beggar's hand. as soon as the beggar had it, he began to walk away with a quick and purposeful stride. "what's this?" cried the middle-aged man. "hey, listen! you are not blind? just now you were pretending to be blind, but now i see you walking away in this way! you are a cheat, not blind! you are an actor!"

the beggar turned towards him and replied: "see the fun! for the ten-paise coin that you gave, you wish me to pretend to be blind for my whole life! how mean you are!"

we are all 'blind'! we are all pretending to be blind in order to draw bliss from the world. we are all avoiding the truth that is within us, and in order to enjoy the world, we try to pretend to be blind to it but the bliss that the world gives us is all too well known. for the little that the world promises we should never pretend to be blind for long. we are not blind, anyway. we are pretending to be blind because we are interested in the wealth the world may give us. the world appears to have a hefty purse, but it is all empty inside. do not believe in the world. it is a mirage. all the saints of the world have declared after many tests that the world is a mirage. let us not be deluded by the world. let us not become attracted to it and forget that we have eyes!

we are not blind. and let us not become blind to the self within. the source of all joy, all happiness, and all peace is within us. let us not close our eyes towards that and seek the mirage outside. let us awaken this moment and turn inwards. there is a gold mine inside us.

how does one attain that gold mine? let us become blind! are you getting the feeling that i am talking nonsense? wait, please! i said, 'let us become blind to the world.' the world is nothing but a beautiful mirage. let us not see it. let us look within. to do this let us close our eyes for about half an hour twice daily. that is, let us meditate. let us concentrate our minds on god. let us pray to him with a yearning heart. he is mercy. he is ever ready to come to his dearest children, to help us, to love us, to save us. he will open our inner eye. the inner eye is called the third eye. once that eye is opened, there is only joy. all the joys of the world put together cannot come anywhere near a single moment of inner joy. and we are heirs of that "immortal bliss," as swami vivekananda called it.

so, in short, let us close our eyes daily for a few minutes and look within. the moment we begin to look within - call it meditation, contemplation, worship, or anything else - we are trying to unlock the treasure within. the treasure within is infinite! and it is ours to be had for the asking!
