Yes. I talk to my kids more and offer them input. My parents dictated over me and I rebelled at 16. I hope to head that off with communication.
Wish me luck. I've heard that the road to hell is paved with good intentions.

Yes, I am old school. I don't have any children at home now but even so I see or know children and I am at times in shock at the parenting style I have to see.
I am the person who thinks "are you going to allow that to go on" or "poor little guy, always being yelled at and never told a nice thought". So, I believe in taking the time to be their parent not their friend, they have friends of their own, they need guidance and love.

I pretty much fended for myself- little guidance as an adolescent and teen- as a parent, I make sure I talk with my kids and do my best to be part of their lives- little things count such as family game time or playing video games, reading, etc - invaluable memories that instill values and ethics from early on so hopefully they won't make the same mistakes I made

I always talk things out with my kids and tell them why I'm saying no instead of just saying "because I'm the parent, that's why".

Mine was pretty close to my parents' style. And my daughter's, much to her chagrin, is much like mine. I love it when I hear my words coming out of her mouth!!

My parents could look at me and I knew I was in trouble, I look at my girls, age 14 and 15, and they roll their eyes, run off at the mouth, etc...

Kind of relating to my last question, my parents spanked much more. We spank too, however more of a last resort.
Other then that, we are very similar.
