I might get killed for this, but in our home it's down for our 3 children (all girls) As a child it was the same way, I still have a exelent relationship with both my mom and dad.

First of all, I do not have kids but I know that I would like to have a family in the future. Me and my husband have already talked about this and even though I can respect other's decision to spank their kids, personally I would NEVER do it, underwear up or down. I know that it's legal in Canada (where I live) but I don't see the need for it. My parents' never spanked me because their philosophy is, you have to show your kids who's boss but they still have the right to be respected. Neither me or my siblings ever raised our voices to our parents or went out and did anything too wild and crazy. Of course, I'm not saying we're the perfect family, but there has always been respect towards one another. I've seen some parents who hit their kids all the time, which I don't agree with, because your kids tend to feel remorse towards you and always fear you more than love you. The occasional spank is okay, but even that, I wouldn't do to my own kids. By the way, you won't get killed for spanking your daughters. As far as I know, kids are allowed to be spanked lightly, as long as there is no red mark on their skin. I know this because I have a friend who works at Childrens Aid.

Which ever way works the best. as you said it was pants down when you were a kid and how are you doing now? Looks like things are going okay, at least you're alive and not in jail. I'm glad some people still lay down the law when it comes to parenting. One of our countries largest social problems today is children running all over their parents.
If you find it works best and has more of an effect with the pants down then by all means that is the method that should be used. It's not like there is anything sexual about spanking your child with their pants down, it's punishment.

First off, congratulations to you and yours for having enough sense to realize that sometimes a good old fashioned spanking is an appropriate punishment. People are getting too soft on their kids these days, and that is the main reason why kids don't have any respect for anything any more.
Now, to the question. I agree with the down part. Spanking is not about pain. A spanking is more about humiliation and nothing is more humiliating than to have your butt hanging out while your parent swats it. I think it helps make the punishment a good deterrent, because what kid wants to look foolish in front of his siblings or, worse yet, friends.

It all depends on how bad the kid messed up really. I do the same thing that my father did to my brothers and I. If the kid had a minor "brain-fart" then swat him on the butt with his pants up. But if it was a major "fubar" then pants down and get the belt. Regaurdless of what some parents think or say kids understand pain and if you spank them they will think twice before they do it a second time. I mean look at alot of parents who don't believe in spanking thier kids for example thier children are totally out of control and walk all over thier parents and get away with almost everything. And it's only going to get worse as they get older too.

I'm not a parent but as a child my parents did spank me it was always with clothing on i believe it was to let me keep my dignity but at the same timr there point was made. I have a good relaton with my parents and the fact that they hit isn't the reason its not excellent. At my point in life right now the fact that my parents spanked me doesnt even register that it happened unless i'm rminded about it and im only 19 and even though i go to school away from home i still live there.

I say up, but if my daughter is misbehaving after she's just gotten out of the bath I'll still spank her. I don't spank too hard though. I suppose it was the same way in my house when I was a kid but I really don't remember for sure. My relationships with my parents were affected by other things, not spanking.

They believed in getting the skin not clothes. As a child I always plotted. For starters I would put my thin, flexible, school books in my shorts then put a skirt on top. So, when I got a beating or whipping it didn't affect me. But, of course I had to act as if I was hurting. I was a good actor because they never caught on. Then finally one day I told my mom after acting deranged from a beating that it didn't hurt and dropped my shorts. She was stunned. Smart kid huh. Of course, that is when they matured and said drop the britches. I made the worst mistake of revealing my secret. When you get spanked you always feel hatred towards them. Because hello it hurts. We know we messed up but dang do we have to go through extreme manners of hurting my tush. Oh yeah the favorite saying.....it hurts me more than it hurts you.....hello who is holding the belt and who's butt is ruby red.....MINES.....RIGHT.......But I love my parents. Any-who I would spank my kids but with their clothes on depending on the crime. Not everything calls for a whipping. And today you have to be careful because of accusations of abuse and etc.

Both my parents and teachers spanked me when I was in elementary school. I think spanking can discipline on children. I thank my parents and teachers !!!
