A chemical reaction in the brain. I read once that the chemicals that make you fall in love, the state of being in love, runs out after 36 months. So after 3 months, you're running on fumes. At that point the relationship changes. Either it evolves & becomes more of a friendship and you make the commitment to stay together even if the "thrill is gone" or you get sick of each other & break up/have affairs etc. Sounds pretty bleak. I actually know a couple of people that always break up at the 3 year or 4 year point so it seems to ring true...I think that if you find the right person you can stay in love forever however.

I also heard that eating chocolate can stimulate the same chemical reaction in your brain as falling in love and it's less complicated! But more fattening!

For animals, it's easy. The female emit pheromones to tell the male that they are ready for mating. Then the males start to fight or go after the females, depending on the species.
Note that a lot of species, even birds (gulls for example) are very faithful and, once they find a mate the stay with him/her "'till life parth them".
So animals are reputed to have no feelings, but I doubt it.
For humans it is more complicated. We don't smell pheromones any more, AND we are supposed to have feelings. But men DO fight for women, and sometimes they are faithful.
Comparison is no reason, but if you can make something of that... farewell.
