Define a Question

In this page you design a question.

The Full Text field is the actual question that will be asked, such as "What is your favorite color?" You can use HTML here for special effects.

The radio buttons in the "Choose Question type" section determine how to present the answers. Click on the Help button to see a visual representation of the different types.

The Question Style pull-down allows using a specialized template for displaying this question in a particular format. For example, the Likert templates provide a very popular layout for asking a series of questions that share the same answers, such as rating 1/2/3/4/5. Pull down the menu, pick a Question Style, and then click on "How to use it" to get specific instructions for how it works.

Some question types, such as radio buttons, drop-down menus, check boxes and hidden fields allow only pre-selected answers. For each possible answer, enter a value and its full text in one of the "Add" lines provided. For example, the value "yes" could have as full text "It is a very good idea". If the full text is omitted, the value will be used, and vice versa. Values are restricted to letters, numbers, spaces, - and _. These values are stored in saved data, rather than the full text.

Clicking on one of the "Default" buttons on the right side will designate that particular value as the default choice, which will be preselected when a multiple-choice question is presented. When used in a Quiz, the "right" choice should be marked as default. See Quizzes for additional information.

For Text fields and multiple line Text fields, do not enter any answers. ViewsFlash will, if asked, automatically tally all different responses. For example, in an Occupation field, all responses of "engineer" will be tallied as the same. These fields are more commonly used to gather information such as an e-mail address. These fields provide an option that lets you specify the width and height of the field in the voting form; the default is 15 characters wide and 4 rows high.

The "Just HTML" type allows you to enter arbitrary HTML instead of a question. This can be useful for separating things visually. For example,

will insert a horizontal rule separating one section from another.

The "Hidden field" type is used with personalized forms. If you enter an answer, that will be its default value.

The "Custom" type specifies special processing, such as checking that entries have been filled out propertly in weighted rankings and multiple ranking voting schemes, calculating test scores, passing data to other programs, and even to extend ViewsFlash capabilities with your own Java code. See Custom Actions for a full explanation of this very powerful capability.

"Allow Other", available with radio buttons and check boxes, adds an extra button and a text field with the indicated caption (such as "Other"). This allows visitors to write-in their own choices. With radio buttons, the voting form will also contain appropriate JavaScript to prevent selecting one of the choices and writing in a candidate as well. When using this option, consider checking for offensive language in the Tally page, and displaying answers in most popular first order in the response page.

You can reorder answers by clicking on the up and down arrows. You can edit a value by clicking on its link and entering the new value. If you are changing something else, press submit before either of these operations.

If there are more than five answers, press the Add More Answers button and you'll be able to add another five. When there are no more answers to add, press Submit and you'll return to the Polling Page where you should Preview the poll and change it some more until you are satisfied with the results.

The "Answer Required" box, when checked, will require that the visitor make a choice in a multiple-choice question, or enter data in a text field. If they do not, the entry will be rejected, usually with a JavaScript alert. See also Incomplete entries for related options in the Security page for handling such rejection when using your own Styles that do not use JavaScript; options include redisplaying the form with the answers entered and highlighting unanswered questions or redirecting.

The "Present answers in random order" box, when checked, randomizes the order of the choices presented to different visitors in radio, checkbox, and menu type questions.

Using "if participant chooses" and "skip to question" skips the survey to the indicated question after the participant submits the page with this question. It's best to define all questions first and then to return to the questions where you want skipping and specify where to skip to then. This allows for simple question skips. See Branching for more complex cases.

Check the "Page break after this question" box, in a multiple-page survey, to indicate that this should be the last question on a survey page. The Design Questions page will show this with a horizontal line and the words "Page Break".

Check "Don't number this question", when using question numbering, to avoid giving a number to this question. Question numbering will resume with the next question that doesn't have this box checked.

After making changes, press Submit.

When you first create a question, you can specify a certain number of Extra fields for each value and press Set. If you do so, each answer's value, besides the Full Text, will have the indicated number of Extra values. These values will be associated with the [/extra0] through [/extra9] values in style templates, described here. This can be useful, for example, for associating an image or a sound with each answer.
