A "Red Herring" is a plot device intended to distract the veiwer from a more important event in the plot, usually a twist ending.

The phrase originated from a hunting diversion of dragging a smoked herring—which are red—across a trail. This left a strong trail on the ground which hounds tracked instead of the hunted prey.

A red herring pulled across the trail could divert the hounds onto a false path. Thus, by analogy, the phrase came to be used to describe any false trail.

Most interviewers haven't got a clue and resort to "How did you feel?" and other cliche questions. A red herring is another term for a smoked herring and is good for masking other strong smells. It could be used to mask the scent of a fox and draw pack dogs in a hunt onto a false trail. Therefore a red herring became known as being a false trail or clue intended to divert your attention from what was really happening.

Herriing is a white/grayish fish. In a large large "net catch" of these fish sometimes, rarely, there appears a "red" fish which is of the herring species. That is a where "red herring" term comes from. Its a rare event, that for sure is there, but not very often.
