I'm in that same boat, dude. I even failed chemistry last year. This year I'm hoping to catch up because it's the most important year of my schooling life. I mean before university, if I ever get to go there :)

Anyway, my solution to the problem is: go out a lot. Have a lot of friends. Not smoking or drinking friends. Friends who know a lot about chemistry. Believe me, my best friend this year is one of the best in my chemistry class!!!

Fully exploit your free periods to ask a teacher to help you. Otherwise, ask someone who does chemistry well to spend some time with you. If he agrees, then just bombard him with all sorts of questions that have been bothering you!

Be sure you retain what he's explaining you. Do all your homework ;) and practice a lot. The hardest part in chemistry is to learn equations by heart. And there's a nice trick to that and it does not require much effort. In fact, it works for all subjects:

1. Study hard for 30 minutes, then take a 10 minute break (go feed the dog, run outside, eat something, but don't go fill your mind with things like TV, computer, etc).

2. After the break, go back to your study. Don't forget to put your full concentration to the subject (no SMS, no music, definitely no ear or headphone, because this reduces your concentration by about 2/3).

3. Keep doing this daily for 2 hours a day. You will see a difference in your way of studying. You will find that, gradually, you will get used to studying, and instead of 30 minutes, you will be needing a break only after 1 whole hour, and instead of 2 hours a day, you will be willing to study for more than 3 hours daily.

Now I sincerely hope you listen to me, and if you do, I hope it works for you!!

Think about what degree/ further studies you are going to be doing. How badly do you want to get into that course? How relevant is chemistry going to be for your career path?

For example, if you desire to be a pharmacist, and determined to get there within a few years of further study, you absolutely must master chemistry because it is essential to your profession. You need to set your goal (getting into pharmacy) and keep it in sight. That gives you something to work towards. Same is true for most science/ biology orientated degree.

On the other hand if it's not terribly important, know that it's not the end of the world. Rather than freak out at the sight of chem, relax and try your best. Do whatever it takes to get better by all means- do your personal best possible, but at the end of the day, as long as after your final exams you can look back and know you've given it your best shot, you will have no regrets knowing that you should have studied harder.

Chemistry is not the most difficult subject in the world (though for a lot it may be, and opinions differ...), and you don't have to study hard, but you must study smart. Study and learn concepts in a way that helps YOU understand. Just because your friend in chem sits down and studies for 5 hours straight every night does not mean that it will work for you. Rather, do creative things that help you learn.

If you're a visual person (learn better with pictures) then draw mind maps and flow charts. If you're a conceptual person, ask different people to explain difficult concepts, then rephrase it in your own words and try explaining it back to them. If you're a memory type person who just memorise it all think of ways to help you remember- eg memory hooks, mnemonics, alliteration etc. Study the way it helps you learn, and don't ever just copy what everyone else do, as no one knows you better than yourself. All the best with chem!

You probably don't like it because you don't understand it.Try asking a friend who's good at it to tutor you, or ask the teacher for a couple of extra lessons to get you up to speed. If all that fails, you can't be amazing at every subject, and by college you can drop it and concentrate on the ones you do have natural ability for.

Well, just think about how you're going to flunk it if you don't try to study more or get a tutor.
