a duvet is a sheet that you can place your comforter in and it envelopes it. it's function is such that it's a sheet so it's easier to wash and also cheaper than a good comforter so you can match them better with your other sheets

It's like an envelope for your duvet/comforter/top futon/quilt. You can easily take it on and off so you can wash it, and it keeps the duvet from getting body oils or dust on it. You should probably wash it once a week with your sheets. You can also air out your duvet at the same time.

A duvet cover is a comforter cover and works sort of like a pillowcase. It fits over existing comforter and can be washed more often and more easily and will easily update your bedroom decor.

Like a pillow case for a duvet (which is a nice thick blanket). They call them duna/doona's in australia I think.

it's a cover that goes over a plain comforter, and it protects it from dirt, etc. then you can just take it off and wash it, without having to wash the entire comforter. they're great. plus you can change them if you want a different look, without having to buy a new comforter each time.
