We have:
Infants, which is:
Reception - Age 4/5
Year 1 - Age 5/6
Year 2 - Age 6/7

Then

Juniors, which is
Year 3 - Age 7/8
Year 4 - Age 8/9
Year 5 - Age 9/10
Year 6 - Age 10/11

Then Secondary school, which is
Year 7 - Age 11/12
up until
Year 11 which is when GCSEs are taken.

You could also do Years 12 and 13 for A-Levels.

Hope this helps!

Hmmm lets see now....
Primary1 - Age 4/5 would equal Year 1 in England
Primary2 - Age 6/7 = Year 2
These two years are spent in Infant School in the Home Counties but with London it's a bit different, I'll explain in a sec....

Then you move on to Primary School and you just keep numbering:
Primary3 - Age 7/8 = Year 3
Primary4 - Age 8/9 = Year 4
Primary5 - Age 9/10 = Year 5
Primary6 - Age 10/11 = Year 6

This is the end of Primary School and you go on to Senior or Secondary School and again keep numbering:
Primary7 - Age 11/12 = Year 7
S1 = Year 8
S2 = Year 9
S3 = Year 10
S4 = Year 11

Now if you wish you can leave school but if you wanna stay on and take A Levels (Highers) you then complete
S5 = Year 12
S6 = Year 13

As I said in London it's a bit different and seems more comparable to the Scottish system - I know this from friends who live in the Harrow catchment area. They stay in First School from Year 1 til Year 7 (so Primary 1 - Primary 7) then they go to Middle School until Year 11. Then they have to go to Sixth Form College if they want to do A Levels.

You would say to an English person that your friends are in Year 10! Hope this helps! =)

in England and Wales a student's school career (not including pre-school nursery education) begins with "Year 1", usually at the age of five, and continues up to either "Year 11" or "Year 13" depending on whether the student is going on to higher education.

in ROI we have junior infants which is the first year in primary school which kids start at the age of 4 or 5. the next year they are in senior infants and then they go into first class, second class etc. up untill sixth class when they leave primary scool and go to secondary school which is 1st year - 6th year.just in case your interested!!!!
