blocking them does f all u can get online checkers to check when youre on secondly why u think hes a hacker? if u block him it wont stop him what u need to do so u dont lose ur yahoo id is to change ur password to a really long combination or words say for example all your grandparents names combined this will stop him from cracking your account if he knows things like your zip code change it too other then that dont sign into any geocities or profiles u receive links to through messenger as they may be fake login pages and will send passwords to the other person

Right click on the person's icon and from the menu choose "BLOCK".
That would prevent him from seeing when you are online and contacting you. They wont be able to access you pc in any way (I think).
If you keep their name on your list you will still be able to see when they are online (or you can then just delete them as well).

blocking or putting them on ignore will help alittle as they shouldnt see when you're online
but if they have other id;s they can still contact you
if you suspect hacking or any other activity by this person you should contact yahoo

Block the contact, you should have an option listed under edit contacts or left click on the contact name for options
