You might also try reading the "The Bogleheads' Guide to Investing" by Taylor Larimore, Mel Lindauer, Michael LeBoeuf, and John C. Bogle. Mr. Bogle was the founder of The Vanguard Group.

First and foremost, spend some 6 months doing fake trades (paper trading) before putting your money on the line.

Paper trade the SPY ETF, since you need to know where the market is going before choosing individual stocks. To do so read about technical charts and economy indicators.
