This is heavily dependant on where your located. I can purchase two houses for the house I have here depending on where I am located you need to rephraze this question for your area and be more specific and there are sites online for pricing for building homes. I know Menards sells log homes to build the complete thing.

How much would it cost to build a 3 bedroom, 2 bathroom house, of average size in central/west texas? Nothing luxurious, just basic

It would depend on lumber prices in your area. You can figure $60 to $120 per square foot. An average 3 br 2 ba home is about 1200 to 1600 sq. ft. so multiply 1400 (average) times $90 (average) and you'll get $126,000.00. Then you'd add a basement, etc. to that. Of course that's if you do all the labor yourself.

I have no idea how much a conventional stick frame home would cost. But a log home depending on the area of average standards would probably run about 100 to 150 bucks a square foot. Depends on A LOT of things. If you do this yourself you can get it down to about 65 bucks but who knows how much you spend in the kitchen and what not.

I have a simple formula that has no scientific basis, only deductions.
If your salary allows you to live comfortably in a community, multiply your annual salary by five and you'll have the cost of a house in that community.
Land, labor, taxes and materials all depends on how much money people have to spend and if you spend more than what you make, you will not be living there too long.
