Unfortunately no. It has been tried before when New York signed Pele back in the 1970's. It resulted in a short term interest but quickly died down. As you know Pele was considered the greatest soccer player in the world and was a member of the 3 time world cup champion Brazil team.
Although many kids play the game in the United States it seems there is really no interest on the professional level. America has so many other sports that capture the interest of the fans. American football, baseball, the NBA, college basketball and football and of course the NHL. There really doesn't seem to be time for soccer.

Beckham's move LA may temorarily move soccer up the ladder. Football and Baseball will always remain as the major sports of interest in the USA. Americans are very loyal to their home developed sports and a whole developemnt in those sports has been created at the High School, College and professional levels. Nothing will change. College and high school football will always outperform soccer. That leaves the NFL to be the football game of choice.

It will only bring curiosity and more hollywood hype. Expectations will be high at first, but then most people would want to watch his life, not his game. That's the sad truth. What happens in a football field for 90 minutes is non-stop. Most people in the US will want to see David more on tabloid magazines than scoring free-kicks, although that may be a highlight to some degree. But then again, maybe we'll see him in Hollywood. AS AN ACTOR (who plays this wee game called "football" outside the USA. but that's how its really called anyways).

I would say Yes and disagree with everyone here. I've heard people saying that they would go watch our Pittsburgh River Hounds if they played L.A., just to see Beckham, even if they're not soccer fans. I would too. That's what he brings and that's why he's worth the money.
I just can't wait to hear all of the other athletes crying about their salaries. "Oh, I only make 10 million a year...waaah."
Oh boo - freaking - hoo!

In answer to your question, i think the American public will be more interested in how the Beckhams live in ridiculous opulence than Davids ability to play football. I'm still convinced he is merely an average footballer who has been blessed with 'marketability', to be totally honest i think i have more football prowess than David Beckham, and i think it's almost criminal how much money he is going to make in relation to his talent. It embodies how truely unjust the world really is. I think a player of Zindanes calibre would have been a much safer aquisition considering it's for footballs sake. However acpuiring David Beckham has little to do with football, and more to do with making money.Aside of being a decent footballer, i'm really passionate about football, and it upsets me that Beckham came out with all that rubbish about doing for the kids, he will earn 10 times the wage of his team mates, and quite frankly he doesn't have 10 times their ability, but i've heard it said that fact is stranger than fiction, and i think it's strange the Americans have wasted so much money on a footballer being honest, who was never that exceptional. On a final note i think it is actually a bad advertisment for football, and i wish we'd get away from paying people an inappropriate wage because of how good looking their perceived to be. After all the name of this beautiful game is called ''FOOTBALL''.

Ha!, it will definitely be a perk for the sport but in no way will it ever become a major sport in the US. Americans are too self centered and fat to embrace a world sport where you actually have to be fit to play, besides they also suck at it as well, that's the only reason why they really hate it.

No, but when and if the USA gets into the World's national sport, they would dominate forever. Don't encourage them!
We don't need 4 halves in a game, cheerleaders, Multipule balls and timeout.
Actually the cheerleaders would be okay :)

NO........He's not Pele, plus people in the U.S. like high scoring sports and lots of action, they don't like to see a score of 1 to 0.
NOTE: I have nothing against soccer....I was a 3 year Letterman Goalie in High School....I just try to "keep it real"
