If you have confidence within yourself you don't need to boast. If you're conceited & high on yourself, it makes people want to tear you down. If you're modest & express a humble opinion about yourself it makes people want to build you up.
False modesty & fishing for compliments isn't good though. It doesn't always work. It can be addictive though (the skinny girls who say "oh I look so fat" & meanwhile they look like supermodels, they just want the attention...)
I think it's healthiest to admit your flaws & recognize your strengths. To have a realistic opinion of yourself & not need approval from others. It pays to be modest because it means you're honest with yourself. You are quietly strong, confident but not arrogant.

It pays but don't be the most modest person in the world otherwise you might have some low self-esteem and underestimate your power and skills.

LESS HEADACHES!
I flap my gums and brag a wee bit of my success while I'm here on yahoo answers, but no one knows who I am while on this site.
Being modest and keeping a low profile run hand and hand in my opinion. I'm all about helping people out and achieving goals. Nobody likes it rubbed in their face!

Modesty is a waste of time. Most people, when they see someone being modest, assume it is fake, false modesty if you will and wil accuse them of being insincere. That being said, modesty is a complete waste becasue all you get from it is derision and accusations if subterfuge and pretense.

It always pay to be modest. Modesty gives us self-respect. If we can't respect ourselves, who will?

The aura of sluttiness never darkens your door.
But seriously, let's reverse that: What do you get from being immodest? -- STD, trashy rep and friends, worship of a shallow, superficial lifestyle.
That's kinda my real answer.

You maintain your dignity and integrity, and maybe don't get what you want in today's world. Still the better option in my opinion. Also, you eat less crow if you fail!
