It makes people nervous and apprehensive generally. Instead of opening their front doors with confidence, they peep through windows, chain them up with a safety chain and peer through the crack every time somebody rings the bell. They are afraid to go out and neurotic about letting anyone know when they are on holiday. Victims have a feeling of invasion, degradation, humiliation at the thought that their intimate possessions have been rifled through by strangers. Sometimes they feel that their clothes are unclean and find it hard to wear them again. Instead of viewing the world with candour and trust, they feel generally mistrustful about those around them.
Strangely enough, however, there are positive spin offs in the form of a stronger community spirit as neighbours look out for one another and are bolder when reporting supicions. The setting up of neighbourhood watch groups brings people together in a neighbourhood in a very special way as they become acquainted with other inhabitants of their neighbourhood and feel some responsibility for the neighbourhood as well as their own homes and families.
