Have plug holes in sinks always had metal bits over the top of them? What are they called?

If your talking about the one inch plug holes in the top of the sink you can buy the snap in chrome fillers at "Ace" hardware, Home Depot, any of the other outlets that handle plumbing supplies.

Those plugs are called "Hole Covers or sometimes called "Sink Hole Cover" I know not very technical! But they are manufactured in different ways depending on the company. Some are constructed of solid stainless steel, polymers or plastic, and yet some are made with polymer and have a metal cap over them as your question refers to.
