or do you need some special software like nero? I don't think xp recognizes my drive as a recordable device because when I click on properties, I dont see the recording tab.

Yes, but only data files. If you try to burn say mp3 file then that will be burned in the disk as a data file and all players are not compatible with data disks. One thing i want to personally recomend is that the burning feature of XP if not reliable and you may get a corroupted disk. Better to use any of the free dvd brning softwares

XP will only burn CD's, not DVD's. (XP Media Center can burn DVD's as well) so you'll need to get an auxiliary burning software (nero,roxio,ulead...)
