Good heavens. Well it is never very pleasant, because there is threat involved, which you can only remove by taking the action that does not necessarily please you, but is demanded by the other party.
Now it may be that the ultimatum is undeniably for your own good (smoking, for example) or that your conduct is truly unbearable (marital cheating or a filthy room for example). If so, it is too bad, a sad state of affairs to be at the point of ultimatum.
Bottom line is I don't think an ultimatum often works magic on the receiver, if the parties are more or less equals. But it may well solve an unbearable problem for the giver. Or the giver of the ultimatum may just be a plain bully or manipulator!
So many options, I'm sorry I could not be more definitive, but would need to know more to have a specific opinion.

i myself have been through thousands of ultimatums in life. i think we are all used to them as apart of life. I have given them, I have recieved them. They are nothing more than form of strong communication.
