wholeheartedly agree. this world has gone mad! i'm sure it'll only be a matter of time before it's once again legal to appropriately cuff your kids. Or other's kids for that matter.
but before that happens, well things will probably continue to go from bad to worse - until such time as we get a government in that is perhaps more radical - but also in possession of a backbone - and the will to provide legislation that protects the sensible majority fom the threat of legal action.

I agree our govenrment has double standards of the most reprehensible kind, but don't they all ? I find myself thinking I'll leave the country if Blair get's another term in No.10 the guy's a certifiable nutcase.
Your question has raised a few voices on the subject of hitting children... to that.... My mother beat the life outta me, I say NO !
No child deserves violence as a punishment or an "aid to learning", bring back the cane ? Idiot ! why not just make prison a deterrent rather than a hotel for junkies, and actually make criminals suffer rather than trying to "help" them ? Let the punishment fit the crime.... Cheeking a teacher ? Is that a crime worthy of actual bodily harm as punishment ? I could go on and on.... I shall shut up.
I bring my daughter up perfectly well with common sense, tellings off and a thinking chair.... and she seem's a perfectly balanced child to me.

I've never had to be violent towards my own daughter. It just isn't necessary. After all, I love her; why would I hit her? I talk to her, I explain things to her, and I always have done. I never lie to her, and she knows that she can trust both my words and my behaviour. She is a very well behaved, socially able child.
If you think that smacking never hurt you, I'm afraid the damage it has done is that you now think it's ok to smack. I bet you didn't think that when you were a child (i.e. small and unable to defend yourself against the big agressor).
The bigger consequence in the world is that we are able to go to war, and think it's ok to hit other people because we think we're 'right'. So no, that shouldn't happen either. We should set an example both to our children, and to the rest of the world.

I got a few smacks when I was little and never did me any harm. I think the principles behind the laws are sound, to protect kids from abuse, but making it law that you cannot smack your children will not stop abusers, they will just cover their tracks. I think people should be allowed to bring up their children as they wish, you see some very unruly kids these days and a smack wouldn't go amiss, although having said that it is sometimes the methods of parenting that cause naughty kiddies.
Maybe, as you say, if they took more time to look at the issues here than passing 'blanket' laws so they can concentrate on the affairs of other countries we might see an improvement

Yeah bring back spanking and flogging- two fine British Isles traditions.
These trditions can continue into marrital relations, where the misbehaving woman can be disciplined in a suggestive fashion...
Girls love a good bottom spanking... not too hard- just make the cheeks nice and rosy.

Faith & loving care are the key-words in family relationships.Only preaching wont work. You have to set examples by your OWN behaviour.Children are much smarter than you expect.Using cane will only make them rebel. There are some good punishments like your punishing yourself for their bad behaviour..Try...& see the results....All the best...

Theres a difference between a tap on the leg/bum and beating a child, unfortunately because of the few who go to the extreme we're all treated as wrong.

How can we teach our children violence is wrong if we use it to discipline them? I'm not entirely sure what the point is you are trying to make but I don't think I agree with you.

my parents spanked me on a regular basis. they did it out of love not "for the fun of it". those who freak out over spanking need to look at things a little closer. i'm not saying to go out and abuse a child by any means, but sometimes nothing else works.

I agree complety, My parents punished me when I disobeyed. and as I look back i could have used more, I know in todays world and even back in my time children were abused, but to take away our right to displine our children is not right.
my children are all grown but they did not excape if they did something wrong.
