It depends on what you like to do on the computer. You also didn't mention whether your motherboard is AGP or PCI-E.
If it's just a email / work / school machine then I'd recommend something cheap and reliable. Just about anything will do for this as long as it's compatible with your system.
If it's a gaming machine or you do a lot of video editing I'd recommend something like this if you like ATI.

or this, if you like Nvidia

I'm running two Nvidia 7950GT's in SLI in my gaming machine and I love them.

Easy question to answer, in that price range the GeForce 7950GT is the best available, which is why it surprises me no one has said that yet. The closest anyone came was the person who suggested the X1950Pro, which is very good, but is consistently outperformed by the 7950GT. Get this one, it is the overclocked version:http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16814186005

in case you're in trouble-free words operating your video games at 1024 x 768 you won't be able to favor a lot more suitable than a 8600gs. yet in case you fairly favor to bypass for the overkill: attempt the ATI 4850 ($one hundred seventy-$2 hundred) or the Nvidia 8800GT or GTS ($one hundred and fifty-$2 hundred). i in my opinion have beloved nvidia over ati for decades, so i advise that. all and sundry of those playing cards will likely get you round 60-eighty fps in crysis med. set., at 1024x768. At severe, 1280x1024 you'll likely get round 35-40

Hey dear please do not but any graohics card now. But you really need something now then only go for nVidia 8800 based card because only this crad supports Directx10 which is the future of graphics and vista supports this. But this card is costly now as their is nor rival for this card. so please wait a little long proabably two months and then but any Directx 10 compatible card
