'Dispossession' means being ejected by legal or illegal force from that which you own or occupy. A whole nation of people may be dispossessed from their homeland by an invader. A family may be dispossessed of their home by court order, eg for failing to maintain mortgage payments.

To be "dispossessed" is to forcibly thrown off of land that one used to own. The Native Americans and the Australian Aborigines are both examples of peoples who were "dispossessed" by the European settlers.
