Can nuclear reactions be carried out with elements other than uranium or plutonium? Such as magnesium, iron, or pollonium?

Yes, a nuclear reaction is a description of an action between two atoms. The limits of our technology have defined our capabilities but with energies that are possible, ie the sun, there are many other elements that can have a nuclear reaction.

Yes. In the sun there are milions on nuclear reaction, without uranium or plutonium.

If the temperatures and pressures are adequate, any element can undergo nuclear reacitons. They are happening in the cores of stars all the time.

If by nuclear rxn. u mean nuclear fission then the ans. is no with elements as iron,polonium,magnesium...but it can b done by any fissile...
