I would like to purchase a new printer.

My usage is mainly word documents, sometimes colour maps etc.
I would want something with the facility for scanning/copying as well.

Fairly inexpensive, but willing to pay a bit more if good value considering the next two requirements:
Fairly fast
Ink cartridges that wont break the bank.

Thank you for your advice.

Don't touch Dell or Lexmark printers (individual or all-in-one) - they are both of the same - cheap printers but expensive replacement cartridges.
If you can afford it, better to have separate items ie separate printer and scanner so if 1 breaks down, the other item is usable. Epsons are good printers - very easy to get hold of replacement cartridges in bulk or single from Ebay. HP printers are good printers also, though cost of replacement cartridges are slightly higher than Epsons. Only use the refilling option if you are confident you can do the refilling without contaminating or overfilling.

Depending on what you want from a scanner (ie do you want to scan slides/negatives as well as scan documents/photos) the price can vary from £25 upwards for basic scanners in UK and printers around £40 upwards. For an Epson C48 (fab documents and photos) printer cost me £48. An Epson Scanner (scans negs/slides/docs/photos) cost me £58.00 so both weren't too expensive a purchase.

Hope this helps

There are some brilliant low cost all in one printers and if you have your cartridges filled instead of buying new ones you can save a lot of money. I have a HP model with Pictbridge. This allows you to print straight from your camera without the need for the computer. Speed depends on how much you are prepared to pay. Lexmark are pretty good but I found the ink a bit pricey and the scan/copy changed the colour too much from the original. The HP Vivera I have right now is a year old and I have hammered it with printing. It still works fine. The secret is to clean them regularly. You can do this through the Printer programme.

There is very little between the major brands and they all have reasonably priced entry level printers with good quality print. I have a basic HP printer HP1100 and I've had excellent results. If you are worried about ongoing costs, I would look at the prices of cartridges and then buy the printer based on that.

You can try HP OfficeJet models, they are Printer,Scanner and Photocopy machine all in one and they are not expensive, depend on internal memory the printing speeds are different.
The only disadvantage is ink cartridge price, it is very expensive to replace the cartridge, if you want to use your printer very much. then you have to buy an expensive Laser Jet series.

Research, research, research. A multifunction from HP or Canon are always a good bet. If you have Costco, go check out what they have available. Read reviews at www.cnet.com, circuitcity.com, and amazon.com. That's the best way to find out what people think.

I'd reccomend a hp all in one printer or a canon all in one printer- they are the best. If you have a dell computer though it's best to go for a dell printer all in one

get canon, hp or epsom, don't touch lexmark, the printers are cheap but you pay through the roof for replacement ink
