Go to a dealership that offers in-house financing. You'll need to have some sort of down payment, though. My friend is in a similar situation and she was looking at cars that cost $6000 and the dealerships told her she'd need $1900 down.
The downside to those places is that they usually don't report your payments to the credit bureaus, so purchasing a car through them and making payments on time will not show up favorably on your credit. A lot of them want you to make a payment every two weeks as well.
Is your credit as bad as you think? You can go to www.annualcreditreport.com and get a free copy of your credit report from each of the big three credit bureaus. First, check to see if anything on there is incorrect and dispute it. Unless they can prove that it's your debt, it will be removed from your credit report. Next, work on paying off anything small that you have...it would suck to have something that was only $40 (for example) on your credit report when you could just pay the debt and get rid of it.
Hospital bills are not usually looked at when determining your credit, at least for buying a car.

I also have bad credit and just recently got a car loan through 1-800-barnone. They were great it was very easy I was approved and got my car all within the same week. They didn't ask for a lot of information or paper work. They were pleasant and helpful and I don't have a very high rate either. So don't be scared just try it can't hurt. Good luck!

Try a credit union, they may be easier to work with.
You can get a car, but you're going to pay a much higher interest rate. Shop around and get the best deal you can. Also, try to pay it off faster so you don't pay much interest, but negotiate so you are allowed to do that without a penalty.
Buy a used car, so it's a lot cheaper. And figure out how to get yourself out of debt and improve your credit. I had all my credit cards paid automatically out of my bank account, so I don't miss a payment.

Pay the higher rate and go get one. They advertise all over the newspapers where u can go and get a car with bad credit
so for the first year u pay a higher percent, but then after that u can refinance and get a lower rate.
