You know what.....try drinking plain old WATER! There is research in the journals of the AMA that shows WATER not only will help you stay alert but will also help you retain information and learn better. Doctors have been able to show (and I can't remember the exact journal numbers but if you look it up on google scholar i am sure you can find it!) that water is the most beneficial to memory.
What people do not understand is that caffeine actually can make one more tired in high doses. It dehydrates the body and, if you talk to doctors and personal trainers, can weaken you. The body is mostly water and we need water to survive. Stay away from caffeine. You may feel tired for a day or so but you will perk up as you clean the caffeine out of your body and your body will thank you. I have started to drink nothing but water during the day and feel so much more alive and full of energy than I ever did on my caffeine binges! I also believe I am remembering more of what I read and hear than i did before. It is weird I know but look it up (go to webmd!)
WATER WATER WATER WATER WATER (Even if it is flavored just not caffeinated!)

My absolute favorite is Sugar Free Red Bull. But coffee, tea (green tea is amazing, helps with focus and has powerful antioxidants as well), or any other energy drink work well to.

Tea for sure...and that too really hot.
This is the best beverage one can have to avoid sleep as it has been proved that tea is good for health.
