There is an equal group of people definitely wanting one or the other.
Usually the ones who like the 2 door coupe want it for the perceived image or being care free, and of course the message is out to the world--" I have no responsibilities!!- no kids, no friends, no passengers, just I, me and myself enjoying the wind." "I dont even buy groceries!"
In their defense, maybe the second car is a practical 4 door.

My son is concerned that everything he wears, uses and displays is COOL. This means that everything he wears, uses and displays must meet the approval of his peers. That is what cool, sporty, and other catch words mean. Advertisers know this, and play [more like prey] on this human weakness to impress others. So if everyone thinks and does the same thing, there is predictability, and hucksters can make money on this.
Then we grow older and realize this is all BS. Then we start thinking about what we really like instead of what the crowd likes. Four doors on a car is far more practical than a two door car for most people. Family with kids, easier access to back seat [parcels from stores fit in better], agent with clients and many more examples demonstrate the sheer impracticality of two doors on a car. Even the single dude with his two seat sportster is always in need of a bigger car on many occasions. Sometimes our eyes are bigger than our common sense.
When the need to impress disappears, then we are truly free. Then we can buy our four door cars, and on occasion, when the spirit moves and our wallet is forgiving, we can buy a hot black as the night corvette -- or if we get really wild and have Bill Bates as a buddy, a Ferrari. Heck, we only go around once.

Four doors implies the need for a backseat, which implies children. This just is not sporty to most people. Sporty implies sexy. How can you be sexy driving around with a bunch of toddlers in your backseat? Not saying I agree, necessarily, just saying that is the view.
