I have often recommended this to other people but yesterday I suddenly realised that if I were asked how exactly this is done, I wouldn't know what to say. I'm talking about the more existential fears - of dying, illness and old age. So turning to the professionals or medicating yourself would not be the thing.
Just interested what you all think.

I once had an irrational fear of spiders, no doubt stemming from my mother telling me as a small child that if I touched one, I would die. (thanks mom) A few years back I forced myself to watch a garden spider build her web in one of my rose bushes, and then every day I would go check in on her. Talk about heebie jeebies, I wanted nothing more than to crush her under a shovel! It gradually got to where I could watch her without cringing though. Then I started watching other spiders go about their business. Eventually I got to where I no longer break out in a cold sweat when I see one. I am still not too fond of finding one in my house and if it gets on me it's gonna be toast, but I no longer feel overwhelmed with fear when one appears.

So for me, I simply had to force myself to deal with the object of my fear on a daily basis, until I realized there was really nothing to be afraid of.

By recognising you have the fear for starters, talking about it lessens the fear. Seeking professional help is another step and also actively making yourself face the fear by doing what you wouldn't usually do could help.
