In some cases they can become reliant on them, take for example the calculator. I knew a kid who was so reliant, they couldn't do basic math without one (I'm talking anything past addition and some subtraction - even that was too hard.) This was in their final years at school.
Socially, some use them as a replacement for friends and 'normal' activities. Especially if they're being bulied at school, it can become an escape and then it can become their entire world if the parents (or the kid if they're old enough) aren't careful.
In the long run, this could impact them mentally when they realise they actually have no friends outside their electronic world.
How depressing have I just been!

There are plenty of electronic devices that are great to a child's development. Pick and choose which devices will actually help your child and teach your child something. If you just plop your child down in front of a TV all day then yes that can't be good for your child. Any electronic device will be ok as long at the amount of time and quality of that device is monitored by the parent.

mental effects? well they become better problem solvers just by learning to use their devices. physical?well there are theories of radio waves and other odd things causing cancer but there is no proof to back that up, but then again what doesnt cause cancer nowadays? anything in excess can probably cause cancer eventually. but sadly there can be different social effects, if you monitor ur childs usage, then they will be a well rounded kid who is up to date in all the different technologies in the world and that will help them when they become adults. but on the other hand they could become so enamoured with their gadget that the would rather be inside than outside with their friends, which will probably lead to bad social skills, and mabe depression.
