It was a war waiting to happen.

The events in Sarajevo were just an excuse to go to war. Enmity had been brewing amongst the European powers for decades.

I think WW1 marked the boundary between the old-fashioned style of warfare (ie. one general in control of a "chessboard") and introduced new concepts of strategy dealing with the mechanisation of war.
