Does it merely refer to people who have specific knowledge that can only be gained through real-world/hands-on experience as opposed to "book smart" intellectual knowledge?
How does one become street smart? In what ways is someone's life generally different from that of someone who would be called book smart?

a kid that grows up on the streets ,knows where to get drugs ,how to rip of those who got money .where to run for safety ,how to avoid the cops ,how to have revenge on somebody that rips him off ,where to get free food ,where to crash for the night how to make an easy buck,etc
this is street smart.
the getting smart is from experience ,pure practical
gangsters are streetsmart mbut priest can also be streetsmart
some times how you live as a kid and grow up is only the
university for what everkind of life is to follow
Book smart is purely theory ,head full of data and info .
university graduates are book smart
graduates of both kinds of concepts sometimes can end up in the same position (but it is rare)

Street smarts is having the knowledge of the "streets"...ie knowing whats going on by noticing subtleties and changes in the environment that would have gone unnoticed by surberbian folks
