if you want to have a good understanding about children of paradise(and how it ties into the name as well..requires viewing) you first must know poetic realism. To put it short, it was a style that cached onto WWII (particularly eurocentric countries like Paris,F). Poetic realist films present the true nature of everything around you....truth, beauty, charm, education, society..etc. They also center on marginalized characters who get a very last chance at love, but are ultimately disappointed. Poetic realism has a tone of nostalgia, lyrical beauty, bitterness, and great surrealism too. Children of paradise checkd all of the requirements perfectly and uniquely. Its a poetic realist masterpiece. Americans like to somehow compare children of paradise with gone in the wind. Sure it might have the same elements 1 woman loved by 4 men. But it is no where near that crap. Watch it if your ever curious about French cinema. Marcel carne rocks! by the way, Baptiste was my fav character

(if I haven't made this clear, sorry my mistake. Children of Paradise, staring the famous mime jean-louis Barrault is an obscure film. You wouldn't find it on any network. But I suggest netflix.)

A great and marvelous film, and nearly all the characters are favorites of mine for one reason or another. Poetic, yet emotionally true, beautiful and sordid, quiet and raucous. a festival of life.
I have a rather special fondness for Arvid, he's a laid-back kind of guy for a guy in his profession.
I love the story of the making of the film, and how all the Resistance workers used to vanish into the crowd scenes when the Nazis were patrolling.
Vive les enfants!
