Well i thought i'd answer this with someone that nobody ever thinks of. But someone already did. Anyway, i think the best female singer i have heard is Sandy Denny. She had the most pure singing voice and was also a pretty good songwriter.

I like Maraiah Carey and Kelly Clarkson but for me the best is still Celine Dion. She has been long in the industry and has recieved many awards and her songs captivated the hearts of many across the globe. Her songs also became themes in movies like the blockbuster hit... Titanic... =}
