Not sure how long you're going to be in L.V. But, i have visited vegas at least 20 times... i, now live here.
The must sees (in my opinion) are....
Fremont Street Experience (free) - downtown
Bellagio Conservatory (free) - on the strip
Bellagio Fountain Show (free) - on the strip
Mirage Volcano Show (free) - on the strip
mind you.. during wind / rain.. the last two are sometimes cancelled
If you have a rental car (or are driving in), i would suggest:
Hoover Dam (take the hard hat tour, cool stuff)
Red Rock Canyon (just take Charleston West & you'll run into it) - and it's only $5 per car. Neat stuff.
If you want funbooks...
1) check your hotel room - might find one. Or you may find valuable coupons in the hotel magazine (usually sitting on the dresser of your room)
2) when you CHECK-IN ask for a funbook, some places will just give it to you, some places will wait for YOU to ask for it
3) sign up for a slot-card at every hotel you visit... nearly all of them will give you SOMETHING ( a funbook, a free item, or even $5 of free slot pay)
4) If riding in a cab, look for the mini-mag called "24/7", tons of info & coupons in that publication.
WHAT TO AVOID in las vegas...
--> time share idiots (they're @ every resort), they'll say "hey, come over & get your FREE show tickets" .. but, basically, you need to devot your valuable vacation time for a timeshare 'deal' with sales pressure.
--> porn slappers (these are the guys on the street corners handing out advertisments for 'escorts), just a hassle
-->$40 slot play for $20 "promotions" - these are TERRIBLE. You are forced to play on a certain aisle of machines that are very very very tight. No one ever wins. So, you ARENT getting a bargain.
-->6/5 Blackjack. These are bj tables that will not pay the 'true payout' of 3/2 for a natural '21'. Just watch out.
There's more, but i wont write a mega-novel.
Bargains:
Ellis Island $4.95 steak special - perhaps the BEST bargain in all of Las Vegas. (((( E.I. is a locals casino/restaurant that sits juuuust behind bally's on Koval Lane... short walk from the strip )))))
Peoplewatching .. sounds 'silly' - but just sitdown somewhere & you'll see 'things'. Suggestion, get a railing table @ Margaritaville (@ the Flamingo). My oh my, the things you'll see.
Tix4Tonite (@ the fashion show mall), you can see a LOT of shows for 1/2 price. Just buy tix the day of a show & save dough!!! They wont have CIRQUE shows, but - you'll see some good stuff for a bargain.

Stay to the main strip area. There are a lot of bad areas off of the main area.
Probably go with the Super 8 right there on the strip or the Harra's a little off with shuttle service. ALWAYS call the hotel to book and talk to whomever answers that do you have anything cheaper (say that at least two times when they make the price offer to get to a 3rd and probably final price offer then book it, then call back a couple times AT A DIFFERENT TIME OF DAY to see if you can do better and if you can, book it and then call back later again +before the deadline+ to cancel the original reservation -write down the confirmation #'s so you can have them pull up you reservation by that # instead of alerting them if they search for your reservation by last name and they see more than one reservation with differing prices and upsetting them that you have worked them over because they will remember!).
You can also always look online for good deals but basicly and usually they pay a commission for the online listing and will "at least" match the online offer and save themselves the 10% commission if you book with them directly -they do appreciate that and may thank you back for it but sometimes not if they feel they were "put over a barrel and ..."
Do you intend to gamble lots of $? There are comp rooms and the best places if you commit "a minimum" a amount of "time" at certain gambling tables or slots. Be careful what you get here because if you commit to several hours or rounds at a gambling table with a SET MINIMUM BET (between $5 to thousands) PER ROUND/HAND/PLAY then you may end up loosing TONS of money.
Bring a credit card with you with a high limit or limit that is maybe a couple hundred dollars away from the limit. NOT A DEBIT CARD! Most places to even stay (even if they don't charge you many require a card) and if it is a debit card that $ in your account is on hold and not usable until the $ gets released by your bank which can take up to 15 business days or more.
It will be hard to not find the cool stuff to do because it will be right there in your face all day and night! Walk up and down the main drag and see all the cool stuff during different times of day and see the "road side shows" like the pirate ship with explosions (can't remember if it was evening or afternoon) and cool sights like the boat ride in the different areas etc. Just go and walk around and really, most things are very inexpensive because it is subsidized with lots of gambling.
Oh, and when you are gambling no matter what you are palying or how little you are betting (even slot machines) there is FREE ALCOHOL all the time...

keep your eyes open - every body has a book - some of the best are free
your hotel may have one of its own - our mistake was going to Caesars Palace for the magic show/supper and and got 10% off by booking before we left - at the hotel we had buy one get one free tickets same show (be mindful that some shows have black outs where they give the performers a night off - so check out a vegas tickets sight before you go to map out your strategy)
as far as slots go - the $1 machine sometimes pay out better than the quarters - my wife won 150 bucks just going into Caesars and playing the $1 carousels just inside the front door -
one dollar at a time - 3 to 5 per machine - unless it got active and started paying back
so we won the money for our meal !
learn to say NO - there are many things you DON't need
keep your eyes open and watch your wallet/purse!
if you don't = somebody else will
we were kind to the desk clerk after the guy in front of us was a jerk - and we got an upgrade to a king corner suite
sweeeeeeeeeeet! made the week nice!
so be kind to the staff
and the best place we found in Vegas - WALMART! they had 6 when we went - needed chapstick and lotion - so dry out there
and on the way back from WalMart found a mexican restuarant that was to die for - none on the strip had it
have a blast!

Careful - pickpockets and soliciters are everywhere. Keep your wallet in front pocket for guys - and girls need a "belt type purse worn around your waist".
A thought to consider - if you want points, every casino has the "key card" to get your them. You establish a credit account.
They do a credit check on your, and they have your credit report.
Everyone knows what you owe, and every credit card you have, because when your name pops up for casino ID, they instantly have tons of information about you.
That is their "COMP" PROGRAM, and every casino has one.
If that is what you want, you will get just that.
No thanks, no comp program with my credit report advertised to anyone in any casino for me!
But if you want to have fun: Read on -
There are many deals at expedia.com and travelocity.com
lasvegas.com
There are casinos everywhere - so don't feel you have to lose all of your money at one location.
There are roller coasters on top of tall buildings.
There are white tigers on the first floor side area of the Mirage.
There are outside shows at Treasure Island.
Gambling:
There are many where you can lose $50 without even trying, then win $10, then win another $50.
It's easy to lose $100+ a day minimum, so if you're smart
you'll back away if you lose $20 - and try your luck another time, or another day.
Best location, and I stayed there January 2006, was the Mirage and it's next to Treasure Island, across from Venetian Grand canal, and down the street are Bellagio and the Eiffel tower.
You can walk everywhere, or take the bus when your feet get tired (very cheap).
Don't forget to lunch at the Eiffel tower - pricey but great, great food, and across from the fantastic Bellagio fountains that have themes - yes dancing fountains w/music when you're outside to hear.
Lunch also at the revolving restaurant -where you can see all of Vegas during the day - THE STRATOSPHER. The food was magnificent and you can see if you go at lunchtime - where the people of Las Vegas live and the mountains that surround it.
Las Vegas - I saw Jay Leno and he was non-stop for 1 & 1/2 hours of jokes, and we got the last 2 seats in the far section, and it was still somewhat close because the entertainment area was well done!
We went to see Mystere show - and the best is called "O" which means water in French. The stage actually opens for people to dive into, and then closes for people to walk on it.
So amazing.
At the end of 7 days, I was ready to come home. It's exciting, but not enough to say, wow someday I'd consider living there.
GOD bless us one and all, always.

Been a LONG time since I was there but I can tell you one thing for sure.........don't go to Vegas to sleep!! Dont expect to spend a lot of time in your hotel room.....get out there and have some fun!! Walk the strip, play the slots, people watch, eat at their CHEAP all you can eat buffets, explore the elaborate buildings, see some shows. Oh.....you might check out the matinee playing of Nathan Burton, the magician who went pretty far on the reality show "America's Got Talent." When I go back to Vegas that will be first on my list....he has been on TV shows since then and he is SUPER.

that's great! make sure you are aware of your surroundings, you need to buy a all day bus pass to travel the strip when your feet get tired, you only spend 5 bucks, and dont need a car at all. make sure you site see the whole strip and go into every casino possible, you never know who you might run into.... as far as gambling you may need at least 200 bucks, play the roulette table, there is a minimal of 10 bucks and up to 1000 but unless youre a high roller, you decided, it is so much fun...also black jack, tip 1.00 chip to waitresses since drinks are free as long as you are playing,. in reality , you spend more money on souveneers for people then gambling, so enjoy your stay and drink drink drink, but take the bus....stay away from bad drunk people on the street if your walking at 3 or 4 am and mind your own business, but mae sure you party away, because this city really never sleeps!!! its awesome!!

The strip is of course the largest attraction but its not the only one. You can get free food and money to gamble by joining the slot club at Station Casinos (www.stationcasinos.com). The more you play (gamble, that is) the more perks you get.
