The number is not listed on the pay stub and I do not have a previous w-2. Is there a free search or a federal site where I can look it up?

FreeERISA.com provides an EIN looked up on roughly 6 million records. The first three searches are free. Additional searches are available on a for-pay basis.

Melissadata provides free searches, by organization name or ZIP code, of a database of over 1.3 million nonprofits' EIN numbers.

GuideStar maintains a free searchable database of more than one million nonprofits. The information returned used to include the EIN number, but a recent attempt to use this service indicates that the EIN is now only available to paid subscribers. Basic information such as the name and type of the non-profit is still available without charge, as well as copies of many filed IRS 990 forms.

KnowX provides for-pay lookup function, displaying company names and locations associated with a given EIN.

An EIN (employer identification number) and a TIN (taxpayer identification number) are practically the same. As for the comments that you don't need one unless you have employees, they are technically right. But with Identification Theft on the rise, you can use the EIN/TIN on Form W-9 (Request for Taxpayer ID) so the party you give the form to doesn't have your SS#.
