Because Americans are lazy. But not me, because I vote early and often. Actually, I haven't missed an opportunity to vote yet. (Granted I've only been able to vote three times).

I know that this may seem odd, but maybe they are not unhappy with their lives and the time and trouble to vote is not on their priority list.
Everyone answers a question like this through their own personal prism or prejudice, and many of the answers before mine reflect that pretty well.
But, voting is not that difficult if it is seen to be a priority. It takes some emotion to make it a priority. If things are very good, fewer people vote. If they are very bad, or there is a "hot button" item on the ballot, the voting percentage goes up.
So, it the necessary level of emotion is not there, and things are OK as they are, and will probably continue to be whatever the outcome, a decision to stay away from the polling booth is perfectly understandable.

That is because they believe that their vote won't count, which is not true. It does count. Look at the Florida vote a few years ago. It made the difference for who was to be president.
I think most just don't care. They would rather just sit and complain about the state of the government, than to do their part to make it better by casting their vote or getting involved. The rest may just not have the know how or like the other poster said, may be unable to.

In the US, there is a misconception that the popular vote elects the President. In reality the electoral college elects the President. It has become commonplace to award all of a states electoral votes to the top vote getter in the elction. In theory, the Electoral College can elect anyone on the ballot as President, and there is really nothing that can be done about it. Another reason is that most people are content not getting involved. We are assaulted with campaign ads, smear tactics, campaign promises that can't possibly be met (with three branches of goverment, there are no gurantees that any promises can be kept) and general distrust of politicians (would you trust someone who was always smiling ?).

because they know, who ever gets in power, will do what ever they want, ignoring what ever platform they were elected on, and will help their friends and families to get rich at the expense of everyone else.
If there were real laws that would prevent those elected from abusing their power, more people would vote. But those elected will never actually pass such laws.
Also, there is very little difference in the different parties. None of them will admit when other parties are right, they attack them even if they agree with the policies
Finally, spin (another word for lying) means that they tell everyone that everything is good, even when it is going to hell in a hand basket.

Welll, some people may not know how to vote, others might just believe that no one acceptable is running for a position.
And believe it or not. A majority of people that dont vote is because they cant vote, say like if they have a medical condition, liek thei in the hospital in a coma, or blind etc.

in the start, trouble-free remember of economics. If Scotland features finished independence then it's going to be unable to help itself on its modern-day tiers of authorities earnings. opposite to regular conception the oil reserves in the north sea gained't make up for the large ammount of taxes paid by using English, Welsh and northerly eire houses it truly is invested in Scotlands infrastructure in accordance to annum. Secondly, remember of defence. Scots make up a small minority of the British defense force, call it 5% for argument. 5% of the present British defense force forces (jointly with eqiopment be it an SA80 or a kind 32 destroyer) will be inadequate to protect a land section the dimensions of scotland. Scotland desires to quit viewing independence as a panacea for all its issues. It also desires to quit viewing the english and historic wars of unification (in which i will not emphasize sufficient that a Scottish King grew to grow to be the King of Scotland, Wales, eire and England - James IV of Scotland will grow to be James I of england) because the source of each thing from unemployment to the cost of fish. we are more advantageous jointly, notwithstanding some thing else of england would proceed to be good with out Scotland and Scotland does no longer.

Because alot of Americans ( I can't speak for the UK ) feel that their vote won't count, or that the gov't is out to screw them. And another majority just doesn't care.

They're all crooks, no matter who you vote into office. Why bother "voicing your opinion" when it doesn't matter how you really feel? They will continue to exapnd government, increase the police-statist policies, and continually throw money and soldiers into pointless wars for corporate profit. Democrats, Republicans, what's the damn difference?
