It's supposed to be 14 miles but the horizon, on flat ground ,is 11 miles away so it would disappear off the edge of the world that you can see before you lost visual contact.

Apparently you can see a lit candle up to 22 miles away with the naked eye. This will also depend on how good your eyesight is of course.

Given the information from:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scotopic_vision
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Candlepower

You could come up with something like 282 m for a spherically uniform candle. A more realistic candle would bump that up to 400 m, which is about 1/4 of a mile.

Miles. miles and miles. This I know because in WW2 which I wasn't born yet, people were ordered by their various governments not to even smoke outside at night, not to show a light outside, they can be seen from the Air from a great distance and it would lead the bombers right to your town.

There is even a soldier's saying, "third on a match" meaning if you lit a match and shared it with two other people, by the third person to light his cigarette the enemy sniper would have plenty of time to sight in on the flame, and the flame would be right in front of your face.

In the windy conditions we're experiencing in Scotland, I should imagine it won't be very far.
