After watching the Pacers/ Mavs game tonight (115-113), there were 91 free throws taken. That's ridiculous!! I hate it when refs have control over the game when they don't know what the hell they're doing

The NCAA basketball refs are just as bad. Partly I agree with the answer about how hard it is to referee, but only partly. Over the years, I've seen way, way too many huge fouls, often outcome-changing fouls called wrong by a ref who is standing right there watching. As Jason Kidd said, it's hard to play with three blind mice for refs.

i watched that game
and they were physical
if your gonna slap for the ball and obviously get contact the ref has to call a foul
and in a tight game free throws are a good way to get points without losing clock

the reason the refs appear to be so bad is because basketball is a tough game to officiate. ever tried? it is unlike any sport in difficulty to officiate.
