Not the big air balloons that you can fly in the sky but the type of ballons you would get at a party. I am terrified they are going to burst in my face or bang near me. Everyone thinks it is funny and have done things like chase me around with a balloon and filled my boot/trunk (for all you usa readers) full of balloons so when I opened it I run away.

From what I understand your fear is not of the balloons themselves, but of what might happen with the balloon. It's very important, in my opinion to make that distinction. (It's like saying you are afraid of guns of knifes, but the objects left alone are harmless, it's the people that use them).

So, I suggest when seeing a balloon, try to assess if that's really a threat for you, in the sense that it's possible to blow up near you, which unless someone shoves a pointed needle is unprobable to occur :) The fresher a balloon is pumped with air, the chances to explode are reduced, because it's integrity is better.

Hope this helps :) It wouldn't be a bad idea to play with balloons urself.. get revenge on them by blowing them up.. even from a distance.. or try to see the joy in a kids face when getting a coloured balloon.. and realize it's nothing but a toy :)

i don't have your phobia but most people that i know that have fears I tell them the best way to handle them is to do it head on, my wife was afraid of needles(syringes). would burst into tears at the sight of one however when she developed Diabetes she did not like being dependant on someone else to give her them so she faced her fear and now they don't bother her.
I have a fear of speaking in public I didnt used to but for some reason I do now. you'll find this humerous since I am a candidate for county commission in my county. each time I get up to speak I do better than the time before. I've had to speak in front of a tv camera twice now and i thought I was going to faint. how funny is that? lol
try starting small with maybe a water balloon and work your way up. I think before too long you'll find that balloons arent as scary as you think. life is too short to be afraid. and its a real confidence builder once you've beaten your fear.

Ian, I'm sorry. I know I should be more empathetic but I keep picturing "filled my boot/trunk full of balloons so when I opened it I run away" I have to cackle. Balloons of every shape and colour imaginable...out to get YOU.

Ok, I did apologise in advance...
Never heard of this phobia before; you may consider yourself very special indeed,

My phobia is fear of snakes. I developed an interest in pet reptiles (lizards) and as I learned more about their husbandry needs, natural habitat, etc., I became less fearful of snakes because the subject matter overlaps to some extent. Then, I just made a point to learn some basic things about commonly kept pet snakes (species, habitat, etc). Of course I don't encounter snakes every day (nor do you encounter balloons every day) BUT when I do see someone handling a snake at a pet store or pet exhibition, etc., I make it a point to ask to touch the animal. Of course the person handling the snake lets me do this. I haven't yet actually handled a snake (I don't need to) but if I were to come accross one in my back garden (yard) I wouldn't stand there screaming hysterically "ASNAKEASNAKEASNAKEA..." as I used to do. It would just be yet another wild critter going about it's daily business.

Ian: the trick is for you to learn all about the behavior of balloons in the wild, their natural habitat, their husbandry needs...touch one at every available opportunity and Good Luck with it!

In all seriousness, this strategy is called de-sensitization (de-sensitisation).

Most people have a fear of something ..... I've heard of this one before.

Apparantly it's relatively easy to cure.

Get a large bag of balloons and a pin.............. (blow one up Just a little) 1 puff of air......... and pop it!
You will notice immedietly that no-one died!

Get another 1 and put 2 puffs into it........... repeat adding 1 puff per balloon. Eventually you will be faced with a balloon which is puffed up to the max! Once you have burst it .........

You should be cured (if you can be bothered to try it)
Good luck!

Thats so mean that those people would do that to you. I don't understand how you could be afraid of balloons, but I wouldn't put you down for it. People have reasons for being scared of certain things. You can't really help it. And thats okay. I do have to say, that I've had a balloon pop in my face while blowing it up and that hurt like hell!
Good luck!

Yes. Sometimes I get that type of feeling that a balloon will burst in my face. Sometimes I even cover my ears when I think a balloon is about to pop.

I had a teacher who has that phobia. Some cruel students once had a whole hallway filled with balloons. It upset him very much and he left for the day. I hope there is a cure for you.

It could be from when you were a child maybe to small to remember & balloon burst in your face & now you subcounsiously you have this fear. You can always overcome this fear is you stop reinforcing it whenever you see a baloon. It will be hard to do, but what one person can do another can do. Beleieve in yourself.

You may trace this phobia back to when you were an infant? You possibly had a fright with a balloon? If you dont remember ask your parents. My fear is of being crushed!! Not to sure where it stems from?
