No, I don't think it's bad that your motivation behind volunteering is more self-therapy than the actual cause.
It's a hell of a lot better than drugs and we all have our reasons for doing things.
As long as you're happy, it's all good.
As for myself, I haven't really volunteered my time in a while. I guess I just haven't found a worthy cause. Or maybe I'm just being selfish. I'm not sure. But I plan to volunteer my time more. I love the feeling. And I suppose that it would be therapy for me as well. By helping others, it allows me to feel needed and appreciated. Even if it's just for a short while.

Hmmmmm. I volunteer twice a month..... It is not for me but for the people that need/appreciate it. I do like the self fulfillment that I gain from it, it makes me feel like I give a damn. If it is self therapy, I think it is OK too. I also take my teen Daughter to show her that life can be worse. Maybe that is self therapy for me? I feel OK by it! It is better than sitting at home and loathing and not volunteering at all!!!

Yes, with the Boy Scouts. If self therapy gets you to volunteer good for it. Bad for you, though, You'd get more out of it if you were in it because you loved the cause, but I guess we'll have to be happy with what we get. Maybe some day you'll find you do love the cause.I'm sure you will. We all care.

I volunteered a lot when I was in the US- animal rescues, fire department, neighborhood groups, Christmas programs for the poor, etc... It was definately therapy for me and others benefited. How can that be bad?

Yes I have, and I don't think the motivation matters as long as you are helping.
