you're right, self evaluations are tricky, because you know all the cool and marvelous things you do that everyone doesn't see, but then again you kind of want to keep some of those things to yourself...

They want to know if you read into things. Just kidding. It's a good question.
There are five leadership styles.
One is Delegative. This is one who says, "I need you to have this project done by no later than the second week of..."
The second is Directive. In this, the supervisor would direct his people in achieving a certain task or provide guidance as his staff requires it. For example, directing an employee through microsoft excel or operating a piece of office equipment.
Another style is Participative. This is one who sort of gets his hands dirty or helps with the workload.
Third is Transactional. This is one who offers an incentive for completing a project or goal or a punishment, such as a write up for not completing a project or meeting a quota.
Delegative is probably the most common style used. Delegative is communicating to an employee that you need something done and you have selected them for the project.
Fourth is transformational. This is one who trains his people to perform at a higher level that what is required. In most times, it is a sign of potential for advancement or a step towards advancement.
How you operate has everything to do with how you use these styles and when. The best leaders employ all of these methods accordingly to the situation. For example, if a supervisor meets with a new employee who isn't comfortable enough to put together a power point presentation, then the "leader" or supervisor would employ the participative and directive style. If the leader was working with an experienced staff who were competent and worked efficiently, he would delegate this project. However, if he had a team of experienced worker, but they liked to goof off and cut corners, then he would "DIRECT" them in performing the project because they have to be supervised. If he wanted to improve his sales or raise his safety rating for his department, he would use the transactional approach. If he had recognized a member of his team for a "lead" position, then he would know that he would have to train for conducting performance evaluations or reports to Human Resources, so he would use the transformational leadership style. Word to the wise: When a person asks that question and that person knows about leadership, they are asking for a right answer. They want you to describe yourself in different settings, situations and how would you work your people with different experience levels.
I have asked this question before. After the response I asked if that was pretty much how they deal with their staff all the time or some of the time. If I gave you a newby I wouldn't want you to delegate to them and possibly result in a timeline not being met or an accident report. That's why these questions are relevant to any organization.

I don't have any leadership skills. I'm best utilized on a project that I can complete on my own. I am able to direct others, but my personality has been called blunt and forceful, and often times those I direct will dislike me. The fact that I couldn't care less should emphasize my leadership qualities, or lack thereof.
I am not much a "man of the people" - I'm better off behind the scenes.

Honesty is still the best policy. People can always tell if you're a leader or not if they work with you long enough. Therefore, there is no need for one to elaborate. I personally believe they want to see how true you are with, from, in your own words.

They want clues to evaluate how well you fit into their organization. You're going to have to be honest on this one.
They have specific qualities in mind, and you'll never be able to guess them.
