Explosions in the Sky are an instrumental band that makes, imho emotional music. Music that inspires, saddens, overjoys, rekindles memories, etc/
I can't say enough about how incredible their music is.
I'd say you should try out
-Our Last Days as Children
-An Ugly Fact of Life
-A Song For Our Fathers
-Six Days at the Bottom of the Ocean
-Greet Death (hard, but very gripping, like something just tore the heart out of your chest)
-Have You passed Through This Night(There's a verbal poem excerpt from The Thin Red Line beforehand, but it dips into a very sad movement with a lot of building grief)

Other Songs from artists are
M83 - "Slight Night Shiver" A song that goes along with a song previous to it about a woman and her daughter being chased by a stalker through the streets and down a highway in a chase, then comes to an abrupt end with a crash. This song catches the serenity of the aftermath, and the cold hard facts of the deaths as cars carelessly pass by...

Matthew Good band - "The Man From harold Wood" just a sad piano movement that hits all the right notes.

Then there's Godspeed You! Black Emperor, but they're more depressing, hope shattering sad than anything.

Also, Brian Eno & Daniel Lanois' "Under Stars" song from their Apollo CD is quite interesting. I find it harrowing, others I know find it sad, two find it happy. It's a strange song.

Noota, great pick! Dead Can Dance is so phenomenal! They totally slipped my mind. They tend to use their vocals as instruments which makes their songs so incredibly interesting :D

Look up Harold Budd on iTunes, specifically Ambient 2 with Brian Eno and The Pavillion of Dreams.

sleepwalk...they played it at the end of La Bamba when Ritchie Valenz died. Very sad in an eerie way.
